Consultant - Mike Williams

Mike Williams is a well-qualified, experienced and versatile IT practitioner specialising in Strategy, Architecture, Planning and Design. Coming ‘through the ranks’ originally from an infrastructure background, he progressed from Technical Architecture into Applications Architecture and then to Solutions and Enterprise Architecture. This broad-based background provides him with the key, cross-domain skills, knowledge and experience required for designing end-to-end solutions in complex IT environments comprising a “system of systems”.

In practical terms, he is an enthusiastic consultant who, as a ‘hybrid’ manager, spans both business and technology, delivering class-leading architecture, covering the whole project lifecycle. Professionally he is a fully qualified Chartered Engineer/IT practitioner with a breadth of practical experience in blue-chip organisations and government departments encompassing significant elements of strategy and architecture. With an enthusiasm for strategic planning, technology, innovation and problem solving, he has experience of organisations, programmes/projects and business transformations, large and small, in multiple industries including both public and private sectors.

Home Retail Group PLC (Argos) - Solutions Architect (eCommerce)

As a Solutions Architect, he joined the transformation programme, which will reposition Argos from a catalogue-led to a digitally-led business. As part of a Multi-channel eCommerce Team, covering Web, Mobile Web and Mobile Apps, provided technical leadership and assurance to the following agile (collaborative and iterative) projects:

IBM WebSphere Commerce test environment expansion – production of deployment models for a number of project phases for rapid delivery to support the large-scale 2013-14 development portfolio. Environments comprised: IBM Power7 servers with PowerVM virtualisation, WebSphere Application Server, Commerce Server, eXtreme Scale server and Message Broker.

IBM WebSphere Commerce Search migration (from Mercado) and WebSphere eXtreme Scale cache enablement – production of deployment models for test, production and DR. Produced Software Design Description (SDD) and Service Delivery Design Description (SDDD) documents.

Flexible Cache Clearance – strategy development including elicitation of business requirements and identification/evaluation of strategic options. Drafted the IT Systems Requirement (ITSR) and Software Design Document (SDD) and set-up a collaborative study with Subject Matter Experts from IBM, Akamai and Salmon.

National Trust – Interim Chief Architect

Joined Leading Resolutions as a Principal Consultant - a business focused IT consultancy and advisory. Assigned to the National Trust as Interim Chief Architect to lead a team of five architects and undertake the following in an Agile and Lean (incremental and iterative) 6-month project:

Produce a Systems Architecture (IT) Strategy which underpins NT’s IS Strategy. This covered:
  • Data Centre consolidation, extending VMware to a hybrid-cloud infrastructure using IaaS

  • A strategic business case for Office 365 saving c. £1m p.a. mainly on storage costs

  • A mobility strategy including Wi-Fi and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
